Surviving Progress

“What is progress?” The question stumps each respondent in this BBC documentary inspired by the book A Short History of Progress by Ronald Wright.

The human ability to ask “why?” has caused us to fall into what Wright calls “progress traps” ensuring our own extinction. Cultural development is outpacing our evolutionary development and we’re attempting to run 21st-century software on ancient hardware—the human brain which has basically remained the same for 50,000 years.

This thought-provoking documentary begs the question: have we really progressed at all and, if so, at what cost?
