Painter Jim Fuess’ abstract work is vivid, full of energy and gusto. He works with liquid acrylic paint on canvas and his technique involves using squeeze bottles with different viscosities of liquid paint and several interchangeable nozzles of different apertures. As he writes on his website, his paintings convey “whimsy, fear, energy, movement, fun and dread.” The viewing experience is as though the lines and shapes are about to start moving and the hues about to fuse, making wonderfully animated creations. With an array of brilliant colours that mingle beautifully, movement and energy are strongly felt in his work.
Abstract, yet familiar, figures, faces, gestures and movements can also be seen in many paintings. “There is interaction between abstract forms and forms that represent animals and humans,” Fuess says. Like the samples shown here, much of his work is anthropomorphic.
Fuess has been on the Executive Board of Directors and was Vice President for Visual Arts at the Watchung Arts Center of New Jersey from 1993 to 1999. He’s the founder and chairperson of the New Art Group (NAG), a collective of artists and members of the Visual Arts Committee of the Watchung Arts Center. He has also curated numerous art shows both at the Watchung Arts Center and for the New Art Group. For further information and to see his work, visit Fuess’ website, jimfuessart.com.
